Part of the potential need for reformulation comes from several new engine tests specific to the second generation dexos1 specification. New European Drive Cycle NEDC fuel economy test: Measures fuel economy via chassis-dynamometer across several engine platforms, ensuring the desired fuel economy benefits across many GM vehicles Turbocharger deposit test: Ensures a lubricant will not succumb to deposit buildup under the intense temperatures inherent to turbochargers—critical to maximum fuel economy gains.

Good morning, I'm getting my first oil change today on my new Camaro SS. When talking with my Chevy Service Advisor and asking him about which oil to use he recommended I use GM's new Dexos 1 Gen 2 oil, which is apparently GM's new standard oil used at Chevrolet dealerships as of start of the year.

Do any of you have any advice on using this GM full-synthetic Dexos 1 Gen 2 oil vs Mobil 1 full-synthetic oil? The service advisor said he is a big fan of GM's new oil even on performance vehicles and Mobil 1 would be "overkill" for the car because I'm not planning to track it.

He also said he only usually recommends Mobil 1 for performance cars with the dry-sump system or if they are going to be used on the track. Any advice, opinions would be greatly appreciated. Dexos Gen 2 is a standard, not a single model of oil. To clarify, Dexos 1 Gen 2, supersedes Dexos 1.

Manufacturers are downsizing engines and incorporating features such as gasoline direct injection GDI and turbocharging to optimize fuel consumption.

These smaller, lighter engines tend to run hotter and are under more stress than older engines, meaning they need stronger protection. The auto industry has called upon oil producers like Chevron to develop new oils that address these evolving demands.

Approved dexos1 oils will be mandatory for both factory fills and service fills starting with and GM models. Oils formulated to meet dexos1 specifications are also backwards-compatible with older engines. Although GM and other manufacturers are designing engines to be more efficient, a few unforeseen hardware challenges have emerged. Oil producers and our chemical additive suppliers have been collaborating with engine OEMs to address these issues.

Turbocharger failures due to deposits and oil oxidation are another issue. These result in inefficiencies in the engine and can result in a loss of power and acceleration.

Choosing the right motor oil plays a critical role in mitigating these challenges.

What Is dexos1? - GM Oil Specification

The dexos1 Gen 2 oil specifications include rigorous GM-specific testing for protection against LSPI, turbo deposits and oxidation, as well as for vehicle fuel economy and aeration. Only the top performing oils in these tests earn dexos1 approval. With dexos1, GM has raised the bar and challenged the PCMO industry to step up its game, delivering new products that address the demand for lower emissions and higher fuel economy. GM owners can feel confident they are using a high-quality motor oil with the latest technology, specifically designed to protect GM engines and help maximize their performance.

I may be a little late to the party, however having been in discussions with the local Chev Dealer in Calgary Shagganappi I was discussing OILS and the long and short of it is that in the Z51 LS3 oil being recommended was Mobil 1 since the Dexos was not out on the market at that time, and the Dexos 1 Gen 2 is acceptable for that engine so either can be used which leads me to believe that C6 LS engine would be able to use it across the board since is when the listing starts for LS3 engines.

Oil formulas are constantly evolving to better technology to meet stringent emission requirements and increase engine efficiency.

Many modern full synthetics, with recommended change intervals of 5, and even 7, miles, already surpassed conventional oils, but GM saw an opportunity to raise the bar even further. The result was a new standard for the industry. In addition, this new generation protects engines against a severely damaging phenomenon known as low speed pre-ignition LSPI.
