Hi guys, I was wondering if there was a flight mode that used IR sensors for obstacle avoidance along with the regular waypoint navigation.

If not, how would I go about adding it and building it into a android app. I think this mode do not exists for horizontal avoidance, only vertical range control with IR, Sonar but for sure no WP nav involved. Is this possible? How would the arduino tell the APM to mov e right or left. But There may be other solutions I didn't noticed! Leave me a mp if you need more infos : maxime. Ok thanks. The goal of this project would be to incorporate an automated rotor startup sequence after engine start and rotor shutdown, engine cooldown and engine cut to support fully autonomous operations. Similar work has been conducted in this area with an off-shoot of ardupilot but it relies on pilot interaction although it incorporates a torque limited rotor spool up which would be a great to incorporate in arducopter RSC.

Details of the rotor speed controller can be found in the traditional helicopter RSC setup wiki. A heli with an internal combustion engine is not necessarily required to complete this project but would be helpful.

Swift Packages are Apples solution for creating reusable components that can be used in iOS and Mac applications. MAVlink currently has several attempts to create a communications package for iOS, but they are currently not compatible with ArduPilot. The goal for this project would be to either create our own universal Mavlink package or adapt one of the existing ones MAVSDK Swiftpymavlink Swift Generator to work with ArduPilot and be easily deployable as a Swift package so that any one who wants to use it to create their own iOS based app can integrate it.

Sonar sensors can be more sensitive than IR sensors, making them the preferred option for obstacle avoidance. Normally, a single sonar sensor is used, at the front of the rover. But Rover also supports the use of two sonar sensors, one pointing a bit to the right and the other a bit to the left, to not only detect obstacles but steer away from them. There is no need to edit the Rover code itself. There are two ways to configure the sensors. This is a little tricky to set up, but well worth it for reliable autonomy. You should also mount them raised as high as you can, to avoid noise from ground reflections. The shielded signal cable and capacitor see section on power filtering can be seen on the rover. We use standard jumper cables for this.

Typically you will set that to 1 and connect your second sonar sensor to APM 2. We use A2 for Sonar 1 left and A3 for Sonar 2 right. The rest of the parameters shown below are appropriate for the recommended MB sensors. All of these parameters, along with the others not documented here, are fully described in the Parameters List here.

This looks very similar to a problem I'm currently trying to solve since we are using a 3D lidar and while we are using the point cloud for processing on the companion computer I wanted to pass a couple of channels through to the autopilot for obstacle avoidance. I was going to avoid converting from the point cloud due to latency concerns, patrickpoirier51 I realize you are using a wheeled robot but were you able to measure the performance of your technique?

I saw the conversation in and was wondering if it would have an effect on this approach, or if that was more of a conversation on how proximity data is handled internally in general. Using the point cloud info would be great if possible. The latency might be OK if we move to a method in which we can somehow get AP to know the barrier information in "earth frame" i.

The latency I mentioned was the time that it takes for ROS to translate a lidar packet into a point cloud and then to a mavlink message, I was planning on going from lidar packet to mavlink message. Although the earth frame would be an interesting optimization. This is what I've been using to allow low-level obstacle avoidance to be done in the vehicle code for Copter and Rover.

If you're only looking to do object avoidance in AltHold with an RPLidarA2 it is also possible to directly connect the lidar to the flight controller avoiding ROS completely.

Btw, is there anyway to send the raw mavlink message from Mavros to FCU? Could I feed the values of the obstacle distance into these parameters and will the drone use these values to avoid the obstacle?
